Day 9 The Spiritual War

I’ve talked some about how we, as humans, struggle against our own selfish desires as part of being on this earth. We screw things up. But we’re not the only ones whose selfish ways attempt to get the way of God’s plan.

Paul says in Ephesians 6:12

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

You see, there’s a battle going on that we can’t observe. Peter describes Satan as “a roaring lion looking for someone to devour”. Even Jesus describes him as “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy”. He is our opponent and his goal is to take as many people of this world to hell. His secondary goal is to make Christians as ineffective as possible. He’s pretty efficient at using our own selfishness to his gain. Disagree?

  • Christian divorces are now a higher percentage in the US than non-Christians
  • the rise of sexual abuse in the Church
  • the acceptance of practicing homosexuals in churches
  • the acceptance of abortions by churches
  • many pastors teaching that Jesus wasn’t necessarily born of a virgin
  • feel good messages vs Biblical messages
And these are only a few that are off the top of my head! I suppose the greatest achievement of Satan’s is convincing people he doesn’t even exist.
So, how do we as Christians fight against him? Well, Paul gives a wonderful description of what we need to do in the same passage–Ephesians 6:13-20
  • Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.
  •  Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist,
  • with the breastplate of righteousness in place,
  •  and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.
  •  In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.
  • Take the helmet of salvation
  • and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
  • And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.
  • With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people
  • Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.
